The Story:
This shirt was named after Franklin LeRoy Merritt. Captain Franklin LeRoy Merritt, known as Roy Sr., was introduced to the idea of organizing fishing trips for additional income by an acquaintance. His fishing prowess soon drew the attention of a New York Herald Tribune journalist, who chronicled his successful ventures, especially highlighting his remarkable catches of tuna using trolling feathers. These reports significantly boosted Roy Sr.'s reputation and business, leading him and his family to establish a fishing fleet enterprise in Freeport, New York. In 1924, as the family began wintering in Florida, Roy Sr. identified an opportunity to expand his venture by setting up a fishing charter operation there. In 1948, Merritt's Boat and Engine Works was established by Merritt and his wife Ennis, who had purchased ten acres of swamp land in Pompano Beach along the Intracoastal Waterway. Their vision was to create a boat yard that would serve not only their own charter boats but also accommodate other charter and drift boats in the vicinity, providing essential maintenance services.
