Since Buddy Merritt was behind the design of Merritt's signature unbroken sheer line, this shirt honors him with his name. As a teenager, Buddy Merritt took the helm of a charter boat in his family's Caliban fleet, operating in both New York and Florida. His competitive spirit and innovative approach to boat and tackle design made him a standout in the fishing community. In the late 1940s, Buddy transformed tuna fishing at Cat Cay using a groundbreaking technique with a long line extended from the bridge, and he pioneered the use of a mast for spotting and baiting fish. He also made history by being the first to catch three swordfish on rod and reel in a single day. Dedicated to his craft, Buddy designed what he considered the ideal fishing boat, playing a key role in creating Merritt's signature unbroken sheer line. Originally, his 37-foot boats were devoid of the modern luxuries we expect today, having been designed solely to catch tuna fish. Buddy's significant contributions have elevated the Merritt name to represent excellence in both boat building craftsmanship and fishing, making it renowned in the industry.
