The Story:
This raincoat takes its name from the inaugural vessel crafted by Merritt. The first Merritt boat was built in 1955, inspired by Norseman and Rybovich & Sons’ first boat, Miss Chevy II. Constructed for $16,000 for a developer in Fort Lauderdale, the Miss Bel-Air showcased unique styling influenced by Lee Woolard, a designer and builder with experience at Norseman in Miami. Woolard worked with the Merritt family to design the vessel with a flybridge, console, and deckhouse reminiscent of Rybovich, yet diverged by incorporating a straight sheer line, unlike Rybovich’s curved design. Captain Buddy Merritt is widely credited as the originator of the straight sheer that has become a classic feature of Merritt’s craftsmanship, maintaining its appeal even after 70 years.
