The Story:
The first boat Franklin LeRoy Merritt purchased was from a movie actor who named it Caliban, taken from Shakespeare’s novel, The Tempest. The name, meaning "ugly sea monster," appealed to Franklin, so it seemed to fit as other boats were added to his fleet. This fleet of five Calibans eventually became one of New York's most prominent charter fishing fleets before relocating to Fort Lauderdale, with two boats helmed by his sons, Buddy and Allen. In 1957, the Merritt family built a 37’ Caliban, designed to minimize white water and effectively lure tuna, thereby enabling them to outperform competitors. Consequently, the name Caliban became synonymous with sportfishing success.
